In 2017, WATT’s team was retained by the City of Calgary to prepare the master plan and design development for the 8th street streetscape corridor in downtown Calgary.

After the utility replacement program that the City of Calgary undertook along 17th Ave, one of Calgary’s most popular commercial districts, several lessons were learned. For this next project, the City wanted to have a more effective plan in place for surface improvements when it came time to replace the utilities along the 8th Street Corridor.

Following the approval of 8th Street SW Master Plan, the city commissioned a design to include streetscape enhancements to be coordinated with the required utility replacements.

• Separate Walks
• Curb Extensions for Pedestrian Safety at Crossings
• Inclusion of Bike Lanes Along the Corridor
• Improved Transit Facilities

Current Status of Project:

The design development has been completed and is awaiting future city funding to proceed to the final detailed design.

In the interim, with the design development approved, developments along this roadway that are seeking DPs or DSSPs for site works, are required to implement crucial surface revisions along the frontage of their site.
