WATT Consulting Group was retained by the City of Kelowna to conduct a technical analysis, preliminary design, detail design, tendering, and construction services for South Pandosy Village Transit Exchange along Lakeshore Road from KLO Road to Lanfranco Road. The City had previously developed conceptual plans to change this segment of Lakeshore Road from a five- lane to a three-lane cross-section to better tie-in with the Pandosy Village area to the north.
As part of the BC Transit Rapid Bus program, the on-street exchange took a complete streets approach with the addition of bicycle lanes and landscaped curb extensions to formalize bus bays and on-street parking. We conducted a review of existing conditions including traffic counts, collision data, and topographic survey. Synchro / SimTraffic software were used to model existing conditions and the proposed lane configuration. Using the survey, we developed cross-sections of the road to fit opposing through lanes, a two-way left-turn lane, bike lanes, and a bus / parking lanes with sufficient space for each. The reduced width of travel lanes, provision of bike lanes, pedestrian facility improvements, and landscaping have enhanced the aesthetic and accessibility for all users.
