Health & Safety Officer / Geotechnical Technologist

WATT Consulting Group (WATT) is seeking a Health & Safety Officer / Geotechnical Technologist to join our Corporate Services team. We are looking for a dynamic individual that is committed to high-quality professional work, meeting the needs of our clients, and working with our multi-disciplinary team to create vibrant and livable communities.

About the Role

With some field work components, the role is a dual role for a Health and Safety Officer and a Geotechnical Technologist.  The time spent on safety and technologist/field activities is split roughly 50-50.

Health & Safety Officer Responsibilities

To provide oversight and review of the company’s health and safety policies, procedures, initiatives, and communications; advise senior management regarding significant safety issues and concerns; work with all others in the company to verify training, behaviours and reporting are in place to ensure a safe environment for all employees.

  • Oversee health and safety program for all locations including updates to Health and Safety Manual and forms.
  • Ensure corporate compliance with requirements for maintaining an active COR status including internal and external audits as required by the Peer Auditor Program.
  • Monitor safety performance of all departments in cooperation with management.
  • Ensure all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of employees, clients, and visitors on site and in the office, including drug and alcohol testing as necessary or required by the client.
  • Ensure all employees have access to the tools, equipment and PPE required to perform their jobs safely.
  • Conduct new-hire orientations and other training as required; maintain training records and arrange recertification.
  • Conduct Toolbox and Health & Safety Committee meetings.
  • Investigate all personal injury, property damage and near miss incidents.
  • Advise on any corrective actions or disciplinary measures arising from non-compliance with company rules and safety policies.
  • Furnish statistics, reports, and documentation for monitoring internal performance and meeting requirements by various external bodies, e.g., clients, governments, insurance agents.
  • Ensure corporate compliance with OH&S Act, Regulations and Codes, and requirements in applicable jurisdictions.
  • Keep informed and up to date on safety trends and changes to standard practices and health & safety legislation.
  • Ensure effective administration and document management of the Corporate Health and Safety Program.
  • Other duties as required.

Geotechnical Technologist Responsibilities

As a junior technologist to support operations through plan checking, basic calculations, drafting, data processing, analysis, and administration. Training on software and processes will be provided. Work may be carried out in 3 disciplines – Civil, Geotech, and Geomatics.

Field Work

Field work could include but is not limited to:

  • Materials testing on construction sites, including compaction testing, asphalt sampling, concrete sampling, pile monitoring.
  • Experience with nuclear densometer and all associated safety training.
  • Familiarity with testing and inspection procedures (CCIL, ASTM, CSA).
  • Prepare daily compaction reports, field safety reports.
  • Communicate with engineering team on field related matters.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment.
  • Other duties as required.


  • Certified Health and Safety Officer designation or equivalent in good standing or ability to attain within 6 months of employment – WATT will provide training for the right candidate.
  • Good with technology, data administration, and reports.
  • 5 to 10 years’ field experience with valid driver’s license.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire teamwork and cooperation amongst all stakeholders.
  • Technology diploma in civil engineering, drafting, or surveying is considered an asset.
